Virtual Worlds

A virtual world is an interactive simulated environment accessed by multiple users through an online interface. Virtual worlds are also called digital worlds, simulated worlds and MUVE, Multi-User Virtual Environment. Some examples would include Second Life, Disney's Toontown, Whyvilleand Wonderland.

River City: Teams of students can use a videogame-like interface to learn in a Multi-User Virtual Environment (MUVE). In River City MUVE, students take on a virtual identity and go back in time to "River City." By interacting with virtual citizens and interpreting evidence, students form hypotheses about an ecological problem in the City. Contributors to the program include: The National Science Foundation, Arizona State University and Harvard University.
